The Mar Vista: Parts I & IV

With playwright/choreographer Yehuda Hyman of Mystical Feet Company and performers Amanda Schussel and Dwight Richardson Kelly.
In this dance-theater piece, Hyman explores his family’s story of immigration from Russia, Turkey and Poland and growing up in Los Angeles in the 60s.
a fractured memoir about an American Jewish family. Taking place over a span of almost 100 years, THE MAR VISTA weaves together dance, gesture, spoken word, improvisation and ritual to tell a comical/tragical fragmented narrative about Hyman’s parents.
“Mar Vista” is Spanish for “view of the sea.” It’s also the name of the Los Angeles neighborhood where Hyman grew up, a working class area on the Westside that had a high population of World War II and Korean War veterans and their families, many of whom bought their homes with the help of GI loans. The neighborhood’s name held within it a promise of views of the Pacific Ocean for all.
Unfortunately, the Hyman’s small house was at the bottom of a big hill which blocked his family’s view. In this lyrical and quirky new work, Hyman attempts to climb that hill and witness the sea below.

Cardinal Bea bring peace between Catholics and Jews?
Author Colin Greer takes the basic facts of history, and imagines a deep and powerful connection between Rabbi Heschel - a giant of American Jewish progressive thought - and Cardinal Augstin Bea, a German priest who dedicated the last yeas of his life to a rapproachment between Jews and the Vatican.
Ingeniously weaving together the political malestrom of the 60s - the Civil Rights struggle, Dr. King's death, the onset of the Irish Troubles, and the initial disagreements over Israel's place in the Middle East - the play makes us think deeply about how our ideals and our actions connect.

Credited with presenting the first lesbian kiss on Broadway (in 1923 at the Apollo Theatre on West 42nd Street), “God of Vengeance” tells the wrenching story of a brothel owner’s attempt to marry off his daughter to lead a dignified religious life, only to have her drawn back into the life of sin in which she grew up. The first revival in Yiddish in many decades of the groundbreaking Sholem Asch drama “God of Vengeance,” the basis of the current Off-Broadway play “Indecent.”
